The first thing (and the worst part) was having to have the spinal done to numb me. It's similar to an epidural. I was very careful not to look at the tray as the anesthesiologist came up behind me! ---WARNING: if you are planning on having a c-section stop reading this paragraph and skip to the next one!!!--- It was AWFUL!!!! She numbed me first with a smaller needle and then proceded to go in with the large one which was supposed to go all the way to a very specific spot in my spine....she missed....and I SCREAMED!! It was excrutiating!!! Then she tried again....and missed...and you guessed it more screaming and crying from me!!! I was hysterical and remember thinking that I couldn't possibly do that again. Then the head anesthesiologist stepped in and within seconds I was numb. Lesson learned- request the head guy next time....do not be the new girls practice dummy....
Of course mom had helped me do my hair and make-up that morning because I had decided very early on in the pregnancy that I would go through labor looking as good as possible. I had seen so many pictures of new moms who looked like they had been hit by a truck...and there's NO WAY I was going to look like that...right...? Wrong!!! After all the crying I had large streaks of mascara all the way down to my chin!!! And, my already swollen face was even more puffy from crying...so much for looking good in those pictures....
Of course as I lay there waiting to be cut open all I could think about was what if it didn't work and I felt everything?!?! My arms were strapped down- and surgery began! I just kept my eyes on Chad and tried to stay calm! I won't go through all the gross details, but I do remember when Dr. Tadvick got in to Payton he still didn't want to come out!! So after getting Payton into the right position he began to pull and when only Payton's head was out I hear "oh, my gosh- this might be a very big baby!".....great!!!!... Then with one final tug he was out!!! I immediatly asked Chad if he had hair, and was informed that he did, and most of it was on the back of his head!! lol
It was no fun to have to lay there and not be able to hold him right away, but I knew that Chad would be by his side the whole time. Payton Jacob was born at 10:14a.m.- 8lbs 14oz, 20 1/2 inches long, with a 15 INCH HEAD!!! Dr. Tadvick said that's why I had never dialated because his head was too big to get down far enough in my pelvis, and that there was no way I would have been able to have him naturally! It was a good reassurance that we had made the right decision with the c-section! Here are some of the first pictures Chad took of our sweet little boy:

Mom came back to be with me as soon as I was in recovery and Chad got there with Payton soon after. Here's my first picture with our son: (Thank you mom for getting all the mascara off!):

He is just absolutely perfect!!! We were so amazed by him from the very first second we laid eyes on him. So worth the pain of the c-section!! Now, don't get me wrong- that pain is still fresh on my mind and it will be a LONG time before I'm ready to go through that again, but the end result is definately worth it!!! He was a great eater from the very first time we tried, he ate between 3 and 4 ounces every 3 hours, and only cried when he was hungry. We were, and still are, in awe of our little blessing!!!
